Center for Advanced Studies

Center for Advanced Studies is designed to develop fundamental and applied interdisciplinary research and high technology engineering in high priority areas of science and technology, to built scientific foundation for new interdisciplinary training courses for graduate and postrgraduate programs.

The CAS was established in 2001 following RF Government Order No. 909-r of 29.06.2000. and in accordance with the recommendations of the Administration of St. Petersburg and St. Petersburg Scientific Center of  Russian Academy of Sciences, on the basis of the Institute for High Performance Computing and Databases of the Ministry of Science of Russia, the first scientific supercomputer center in the country.

CAS successfully carries out its mission as the generator of new projects of the world level fundamental and applied research in new advanced areas of science and technology (research at the "cutting edge of knowledge" ), building interdisciplinary "gates" of the university in order to  expand fundamental scientific competencies, and also making new  scientific developments part of the educational process and technology.

Structure and human resources.

  • Research department of nanosystems interdisciplinary research
  • Research Department of Complex Systems Computational Physics
  • Laboratory of Molecular Virology and Oncology
  • Laboratory "Medical ultrasound equipment"
  • Laboratory "Management of Innovations"
  • Center for Advanced Studies specialists are highly qualified in physics, biology, applied mathematics, quantum chemistry, medical materials science and instrument-making.

Leading scientists articles are published in the leading world scientific journals (Nature, Phys.Rev.Lett., and etc.)

Scientific Advisers of the Center: S.A. Vasiliev, Prof., Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of Vnesheconombank; R.A. Suris, Prof., Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, laureate of the State Prize of the Russian Federation, Ph.D. Ioffe Institute RAS

Achievements

CAS carried out more than 70 projects supported by various Russian and international organizations: the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Industry of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the RF Ministry of Defense, the RFBR, RNF, RUSNANO, INTAS, NATO, EU Framework Programs, USA National Institutes of Health, CNRS (France), DFG (Germany), Samsung Electronics Co and etc.

CAS participated in the project of the European Space Agency Rosetta (its implementation - according to the rating of the Science edition the most outstanding scientific achievement of mankind in 2014).

Initiation and implementation of projects gained the university competencies in high-performance computing, nanobiotechnology, molecular drug design and nanocarbon research.

According to 2016 results CAS determines the world level of research in the following:

  • Precision physics of atomic systems
  • Structure of quasicrystals
  • Evolutionary oncology;

CAS determines the country level of developments in such areas as:

  • Coatings for stealth technologies
  • Ultrasound diagnostic and therapeutic medical equipment
  • HIV vaccines

CAS has the experience and reputation of a think-tank. Following the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation CAS participated in the creation of "Russian Federation nanoindustry development program", development of a project for the Interdepartmental Center for Stealth Technologies and carried out other tasks for the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Entrusted by the rector of the university, Academician A.I. Rudskoy CAS provides organizational, analytical and scientific support for SPbPU cooperation with medical scientific and educational clusters "Translational medicine" and "Prospective research and development for oncology", as well as with Shanghai Association of Biomedical Industry.

Specialists of the Center for Advanced Studies are key developers of the concept of bio-oriented development of the university, "Higher School of Bioengineering Sciences and Biomedical Technologies", scientific breakthrough project "Medicine to the Atom and Quantum" (presented March 18, 2017 at the international council of the program 5-100-2020).

CAS supports the activities of the National Contact Point for the European Research Council.

Areas of CAS scientific researches are chosen on the basis of the world technological development tendencies analysis and for 2017 they are the following:

  • Precision physics of atomic-molecular systems
  • Verification of the Standard Model of Fundamental Interactions by Atomic Physics Methods
  • Quantum correlations and quantum statistics of non-macroscopic particle systems
  • Modeling of physicochemical processes of clusters formation, applications to nanotechnologies and astrophysics
  • Symmetry problem for compact and aperiodic structures
  • System, molecular and quantum biology
  • Bioinformatics and modeling of medicine
  • Molecular virology and oncology
  • Research and development of complex technical systems for medicine
  • Physical fundamentals of stealth technologies
  • Problems of digital economy formation and innovation systems
